Thanks to everyone who came down and thanks again to The Clarendon for helping us out with a venue when Amber pulled out.

You can download the new Duke Ukem album for free in the shop. It comes with an album sleeve you can print out to create your own Duke Ukem CD, as well as a selection of amazing artwork from Adam Berry, including a couple of ace posters he made for the gig and the flyer we handed out on the night.

It was a great send-off, and it’s a shame we won’t be around for a while, but we will return!

Duke Ukem Album Launch

Duke Ukem are finally releasing an album of amazing pop and punk covers performed on their hilarious diminutive instruments. ‘Duke Ukem Sound System’ will be a free, digital-only release on Section Five Records, available in the Shop.

The launch will be on March 3rd at Amber, Douglas. Further details can be found on the event’s Facebook page.

Check out a sneaky-peak at the artwork below, done by the awesome Adam Berry.

It wouldn’t be another year without another site re-design, so here we go.

First up, the news may look a little skewy. This is because we’re now using Tumblr as the blog platform for the site. That’s exciting! So you can now follow Section Five Records if you use Tumblr. Copying the old posts over has made the timeline skewy so apologies for that, but it makes things better in the end.

Moving along the menu we’ve got the usual Artist and Releases area which tell you all about the bands past and present on Section Five Records and what they’ve released in their time here.

Media is a new section where the bands get to show off some video or photographic goodness. So far we’ve got Chris Flood’s video for the acoustic ‘Machines’ track, so have a look at that when you get a moment.

Now come the fun bits! Most of our releases are available from digital outlets such as iTunes and Amazon MP3 amongst others (links to which you can probably find in the Releases area). But we’re experimenting a bit with a new shop at the CD’s & Downloads menu link where you can get CDs and downloads of some of our releases, including some free stuff!

Finally, the latest addition to the site is our shiny new Merch store. Here you can grab the latest designs from Section Five Records, of which there’ll be even more of soon. You may have spotted some of the older designs aren’t on there, but don’t worry! Click the banner at the top of the Merch store or head over to http://section-five.co.uk/classics where you can buy some designs not available in the main shop. These will only be up for a couple of months though, so get them now before they’re gone!

And that’s your lot. The final piece of ace news is The Higgns Brothers have finally got their arses into gear and brought out an album, so head over to the Shop page to get a CD!

Alan.

The Higgins Brothers

Sunny days over crashing waves, cheeky seagulls floating on the breeze and an island lost in time. This is the world of The Higgins Brothers and the inspiration behind their music.

Hailing from the Isle of Man and now based in Bristol, their sound and the new album are influenced by the rhythm of life by the sea, of days on the beach and nights round the campfire, creating fun, folky, sing-a-long pop.

Brotherly inspiration

But it’s not just the sea n’ surf that drive the distinctive personality and tone of the music, this primarily acoustic duo are brothers. Both Robin and Toby write music and lyrics for the band, either one might catch an idea from a cloud and throw it in The Higgins Brothers musical mixing pot. The songs are a combination of life experiences and journeys to the sky and beyond.

The brothers play guitar and cajon and both sing vocals, giving their harmonies a richly-blended quality. For the album, they invited Ruari Floyd to join on bass. They also include an array of different percussion instruments including a Cuban tres as well as some organ.

Transatlantic influences

The variety of instruments reflect the travels and musical backgrounds of each of the brothers - from Dartington College of Arts in Devon to the Instituto Superior del Arte in Havana where they got to grips with Cuban-style guitars, the cajon and the tres.

Currently gigging at live venues across Bristol, the duo are preparing to spread the sunshine, sea and sound of their new album at next year’s summer festival circuit. They’ve put together a mix of songs that’ll take you on a mini adventure. They advise: “Get on the sky wine, hold on tight and let The Higgins Brothers lead you on the vibe to another place.”

Their debut album ‘Pop Coloured Funshine’ is available on CD from the shop.

This Years Winner Is - Always Goes Down Smooth

Before one of their biggest diversions from band life (a good year and a half), Suspect Package recorded an album of their best songs (and some new, as-yet-unheard-live ones) and gave it away for free.

There were only around 160 CD’s printed so not everyone managed to get a copy. Now you can download the entire album for absolutely nothing and listen to it all day long!

The news first broke in March 2008 on their MySpace blog:

“Hello fans!

The best news first – we are recording! Yes, we began this weekend by getting a few drum tracks down. The original plan was to just see how things went and we were expecting to get maybe a couple of tunes down so you can all hear what we play – however there was more. Much more.

It’s looking like we now might put an album together with around 10-ish tracks on, depending on how the rest of the recording process goes obviously, but it could be quite promising.”

Put an album together they did, and quite promising it was. The final, finished, 10-track album was put together by the band themselves and the copies available here are the original hnad-made efforts, complete with all the printing errors you could hope for!

Tracklisting
1. What We Do
2. The Ballad
3. Bottle to Throttle
4. No It Won’t
5. Really Shit Ninjas
6. Chicken Suit Punishment
7. Listen and Run
8. When Good Zombies Turn Bad II
9. Thumb War
10. Without A Doubt

You can buy the album on CD or download from the Shop.

Chris Flood

Chris Flood was born in Newport, Isle of Wight in the UK and moved to the Isle of Man aged just 11, where his musical journey began. Growing up in Douglas, the Island’s capital, he listened mainly to the alternative music scene of the late 90’s and early 00’s before learning to play guitar. As a self taught vocalist as well, he has used these talents in the last few years to write his own material, which has culminated in his debut album, “Opinion is not a substitute for reason”, available in the shop on the Section 5 site.

Chris has been working hard on new material since 2010, which will see a release of a second album in 2011. In the lead up to that, a limited release, download only, taster EP was released in March 2011; ‘The Jam Sandwich EP’.

Having strayed away from the bulk of the live music scene on the Island, there are plans for the Chris Flood Band to make a return of some form to back up the release of the new album and to perform the new tracks to audiences who have waited patiently enough!

Slimpig

Like these guys need any introduction! They formed in the early 2000′s and made a massive impression on the local music scene; their debut album ‘Slimming With Pigness’ sold over 3 thousand copies and many tracks such as Go Away, Superstitious Politician and Constructathon became anthems in their own right.

Unfortunately this great band came to an end after their very last gig at Willstock 2008. A lot people missed out on their limited-edition second album ‘Concrete Floors and Broken Jaws’.

Section Five Records was due to release a one-off album compiling all their best tracks – chosen by the band – from both albums, along with some amazing covers by local artists Chris Flood, Anna Goldsmith, Duke Ukem and Suspect Package, as well as Isle of Man-runaways Swound!. It was also due to feature original artwork from local illustrator Adam Berry.

Unfortunately the album still hasn’t come to fruition, however there are still plans to release this one day.

You can still download free MP3 of the track ‘Lifestyles’ off their first album ‘Slimming With Pigness’ for free. Visit the Downloads page for the link.

Suspect Package

Manx ska punk legends Suspect Package have been going for nearly eight years now, occasionally taking a break here and there, but not for long as the appeal and excitement of gigging is way more fun. Their sound has evolved over the years, coming from punk rock influences like Bad Religion, Rancid and Suicide Machines to ska bands like Streetlight Manifesto (minus the brass), Capdown and King Prawn and takes in every psychobilly, skacore and acoustic act along the way.

Before one of their biggest diversions from band life (a good year and a half), Suspect Package recorded an album of their best songs (and some new, as-yet-unheard-live ones) and gave it away for free.

They took a break following the release of the self-titled album during 2007-2008 to take time to travel around the world and work on various other projects, eventually returning to the scene at the tail-end of 2008.

The band have played a number of shows around the Island and even visited the UK to play. Since 2011 there have been no further plans for gigs.

I Blame You

I Blame You were the band everyone was calling “a metal-punk band from the Isle of Man”.

Featuring Matty (Brave Matilda) from Sakura and Uchiha Clan on some bass with Keith Harris (Big Foreign Keith) from the mighty Slack bringing the loud bashing noises and ethnic charm, followed by Alan (Alan Sick) from Suspect Package shouting over the noise and new-comer Bones (Bon Satisfied) bringing the bedroom guitarist’s sharp frettery, I Blame You forced themselves upon you.

Although they have now split, you can still buy their album in the shop for a bargain, and stream tracks at the sites below.

Chris Flood - Opinion Is Not A Substitute For Reason

Format: CD / Download
Catalogue #: SECT-001
Release date: 17th June 2009

In 2003, it finally dawned on me that my previous band whom i had fronted had split. I took a small while to look around the Isle of Man’s music scene and noticed this was happening all too often, so I decided to go solo, because after the great times you have in a band, you must learn something: people will always want to do different things, and have different ideas.

So how would I get the message across in a live performance that the songs I write for my solo project are now band songs, without having the band? Simple! Become someone like Dave Matthews, Charlie Harper, Trent Reznor or Josh Homme, and hire and fire whoever I wanted, whenever I wanted, in a CHRIS FLOOD BAND! We have been through various line up changes since our first gig in 2006, but we have now settled on the new four piece line up.

Tracklisting
1. Flowers
2. Razorblade Party
3. Your Silence
4. Blackheart
5. Machines
6. Em Interlude
7. Scabs
8. End of the Line
9. Another Dreadful Earache
10. Father
11. Flowers (reprise)

You can buy Chris Flood’s album on CD or download from the Section Five Records Shop or from CD Baby.

This Years Winner Is

Not much comes from the Isle of Man. Not many people can even pinpoint where the Isle of Man even is, so to expect to find a five piece pop punk band looking to climb the ranks of UK scene is, at best, adventurous. But built from friendships, a love of music, the summertime and a dislike for the humdrum of a nine to five environment is This Years Winner Is, and they could be your new favourite band you’ve never heard of.

With vocalist Elliot Kinrade, guitar and vocalist Ben Wilde, guitarist Ethan Grubb, bassist Stuart Bedford and drummer Darren Shields they have a fierce following on the Isle of Man and are now looking to take there energetic pop songs from the Island to the UK.

The newest release ‘Always Goes Down Smooth’ had its digital release through Section Five Records and has had plenty of positive reviews, though since it’s release the then vocalist Tim Tonks has left the band. Elliot Kinrade has since joined, and are hitting the road in July. If they follow their own advice keep hold of those four leafed clovers who knows what the future may hold for them!

This Years Winner Is departed Section Five Records at the start of 2011 but you can keep up to date with what they’re up to on their Facebook page.

A message from Chris Flood

Thanks to everyone who signed-up for Chris Flood’s free new EP, you should be receiving your download codes shortly.

For those who didn’t get hold of a copy (and why not!) Chris had this message -

Hello!

I’m making an official announcement that there is definitely a second album on the way! Entitled “Legion of One” it will be an hour-long 16 track release that marks a slight change in direction from the first album. We’re currently at the mixing stage; getting the songs to sound the best that they can, and we are targeting a Summer 2011 release.

Again, a thousand thanks for showing interest in my music.

Chris Flood.

Sign up for a free Chris Flood EP and watch his new video

Earlier this year Chris Flood recorded a handful of acoustic tracks consisting of new and old material. I’m really happy for the guys, they deserve all the attention they’re getting at the moment and hopefully this will be the start of a fantastic career for them.

As a result Section Five Records won’t be releasing their EP, but you can pre-order it from Hang Tight in a snazzy t-shirt bundle. Having listened to it already I can tell you the EP is great and I suggest you definitely go and pre-order it right now.

This month we’ve got a new website coming, I reckon it should be up in the next couple of weeks once a few little tweaks have been sorted out. This will also coincide with some new music - yes new music. We don’t release much, but when we do they’re corkers. This release comes in the shape of Chris Flood, who has been recording quite a bit recently. So get ready for a new video and some sign-up-for-a-free-EP shenanigans!

New for 2011

Hey everyone!

I’m not going to give much away at the moment as we’re still finalising a bunch of things, but I will say we’ve got releases from Chris Flood and This Years Winner Is coming soon! Keep an eye out for more details as they come in.

In other good news the site is getting a face lift. It should be going live in a few weeks, or possibly to tie in to an upcoming release. We’ll see what happens there.

But, that’s all for now. Bye!

Movember with Duke Ukem, Chris Flood and Richie Moore

Talking shop, shipping and new bands

First up a massive high-five to everyone who’s bought the new This Years Winner Is EP! I hope you’re enjoying it and telling your friends about how awesome it is.

I’ve been tinkering with the shop a bit so it should be a bit easier to get around and find information payment and shipping details. All payments made through the shop are processed through PayPal to ensure all your details are secure. And don’t worry if you don’t have a PayPal account - you don’t need one! Just click on the link to use your credit or debit card and enter your details.

Orders over £10 now have free postage so fill your boots. Or your web carts, whichever is best. There are also a few freebie downloads in there as well so grab them and spread the word about all our excellent bands! Keep an eye out for some sexy model shots of our merch coming soon.

Speaking of bands, from now on I’ll be promoting hard to find the next bunch of Section Five bands and artists, so if you or anyone you know plays in a band and are serious about it tell them to get in touch. I can’t promise I will sign every band I receive demos from but I will listen to everything I get. Although Section Five is predominantly a punk and indie label don’t let that put you off, if I like it there’s a good chance I will do something with it. Send me a message on the contact page and we can go from there.

You can also keep track of Section Five Records and what we’re all doing on Facebook, MySpace and Twitter.
